chalk talk is the result of a 48-hour design blitz created by a team of Notre Dame design students and led by John Bielenberg of Future Partners and Project M. This project is intended to provoke thought and discussion about South Bend, Indiana by prompting passersby to think about the South Bend community and their place in it. Ultimately, our goal is to bring the Notre Dame and South Bend communities closer together by providing a new means of expression: chalk.

Credit goes to Candy Chang's "Before I Die" chalk wall; while we were not aware of her project while creating ours, we're grateful for the precedent she has set.
What was once merely an alley has become a small arts corridor: chalk talk was recently joined by a mural across the street.
One year after chalk talk was created, we learned that Aaron Perri, executive director of Downtown South Bend and wonderful resource for the project, got engaged! He wrote,

"We didn’t actually get engaged in front of the wall, but it was a very special part of the whole evening I planned out for us.

That wall is getting so much attention and so much positive energy comes from it.  Nearly every time I walk by it, I see profound, deeply personal or hilarious statements.  I’ve also seen some neat works of art drawn on there...  It turned an area of blight into an area of delight. Thank you!"
